Generally, the most attention we pay to tiles is when we're scrubbing them. Luminous and delicate aren't words hat we'd use to describe them, even when they're not covered in goop. So, we're ready to be enlightened with the Meadows Museum's new exhibit of Spanish tiles, many of which are on loan from Spain's National Ceramic Museum, in Valencia. Ceramics were carried into Spain from North Africa, and developed into one of Spain's premiere design mediums. The Meadows Museum's exhibit displays the tiles chronologically, and patrons can clearly see how the style changes to reflect the design aesthetic and the world issues of each era. The next time you're attacking your household tiles, take a minute and appreciate how far its concept has come. These lowly workhorses have a rich and purposeful history. Tile Design in Valencia: From the Middle Ages Through the Early 20th Century can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, through October 21 at the Meadows Museum, 5900 Bishop Blvd. Admission is $8.
