Recently opened at the corner of McKinney Avenue and Blackburn Street, Sablon Chocolate Lounge takes inspiration from the Belgian culture and claims high-quality chocolate “is a birthright that should be enjoyed by everyone.” The menu is indulgent in every sense; the selection, the portions and the prices are all staggering. Narrowing a list of indulgent choices to just five was a true challenge. While stingy quantities reduced the appeal of some dishes, there’s no doubt that you can achieve a calorific chocolate overload from these desserts.
Banana Nutella Crepes, $10.95
One of the most popular items on the menu, two thinnish crepes encapsulate a pile of bananas smothered in chocolate hazelnut spread. They’re topped off with a generous amount of chocolate drizzle and a slice of banana as garnish. If that’s not enough, there’s also whipped cream, ice cream and a cup of sliced bananas on the side.

Rocky Road Chocizza, $13.95
Because chocolate and pizza aren’t large enough calorie bombs on their own, Sablon has combined the two into one decadent experience. The Rocky Road pizza stands out from the other pizzas, a pan crust covered with a semi-sweet chocolate sauce base, slivered almonds and a blanket of toasted marshmallows. The generous chocolate drizzle reappears again, and a few maraschino cherries finish the masterpiece. Approximately three days’ worth of calories; proceed with caution.

Eskimo Waffle, $11.95
If you’re going to order the Eskimo Waffle, be prepared to exert a fair bit of arm strength. The waffles required a hefty amount of sawing to cut a bite, but once inside your mouth they turn out to be delightfully crunchy outside while still ever-so-slightly soft inside. Of course, you have to find the waffles first — one is hidden under dark chocolate sauce and a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream, the other under milk chocolate sauce and chocolate ice cream. Then, because two scoops of ice cream aren't enough, another scoop of vanilla hangs out next to a bowl of strawberries. And finishing it all off? Chocolate chips, and of course, chocolate drizzle.

Death by Chocolate Pancakes, $12.95
I wish I could say I tried these and they were OMG AH-MAY-ZING, but I can’t. Because they didn’t have them. On Valentine’s Day weekend. This is the curse of the gigantic menu — logistically, planning for that many items so every customer gets what they want just isn’t going to happen. In this case, the chocolate pancake batter wasn’t made, so no chocolate pancakes for me. Instead, I’ll give you the description: “double-layered chocolate pancakes with strawberries, cream, chocolate ice cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce.”

Thank God It’s Sundae! Sundae, $13.95
All you gym rats on a bulk who are hard gainers, your prayers have been answered. This chocolate monstrosity contains the following:
-A brownie base
-A scoop of chocolate ice cream
-A scoop of chocolate mousse
-Two chocolate-filled pirouettes
-Two “truffles” that are actually bricks of semi-sweet chocolate
-One semi-sweet chocolate heart
-Two generous dollops of whipped cream
-Two maraschino cherries
-A heap of chocolate chips
-A mound of chocolate shavings
-Chocolate drizzle

Disappointingly, the chocolate ice cream could have come from Kroger, the brownie was nearly flavorless, and the mousse had a weird, dense feeling to it. The whole thing was kind of bland, but that means you don’t feel like putting your spoon down after a bite or two from rich chocolate overload. Just like M&Ms are engineered to make you want to eat the whole bag, this dessert gives you just enough that you find yourself eating more. How much more indulgent can you get than eating an entire 1,200+ calorie sundae?
